Behind the Scenes
Here’s a breakdown of the time a photographer might spend on just ONE wedding:
1 Hour preparing for a consultation
1 Hour meeting with a couple for the first time
1 Hour preparing for an engagement session
1-2 Hour engagement session
3-6 Hours (minimum) backing up and editing engagement session photos
1 Hour preview session with bride & groom
1-4 Hours creating save the dates & order fulfillment
1-2 Hours finalizing wedding day timeline on the final bridal consult
2 Hour prep for wedding day photography (charge everything, pack equipment, etc)
8 Hours of wedding day photography
12-15 Hours backing up, culling and editing wedding day photos
1 Hour preview session with client
1-6 Hours on album design & post wedding order fulfillment
1-3 Hours blogging your images and uploading to social to share
So the amount of time spent on a single wedding could be between 39-56 hours! That does not include the day to day business time spent outside of your wedding such as advertising, accounting and workshops to keep up with the best techniques and researching the best products to offer you.
Here’s a breakdown of some of the standard expenses:
An assistant at $12 an hour for 10 hours: $120
Income taxes (20%) owed for that single wedding: $280-$560
Any rental equipment for your day/upkeep of equipment: $100 - $600
Second photographer for your day (minimum): $200
Travel costs and gas: $100
This does not include any of the standard expenses for owning a business which can range anywhere from $800 to several thousands each year! We left those numbers out as they vary greatly from business to business.
